Dutch Culture: Film & Theatre
Discover everything Utrecht has to offer when it comes to film and theatre!

Theatres & Cinemas

Utrecht is home to various theatres and cinemas. The biggest theatres of Utrecht include Beatrix Theatre, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht and the Paardenkathedraal. Up for watching a movie in one of the many cinemas? Think about visiting Kinepolis Jaarbeurs, Utrecht City or Pathé Rembrandt, which are all located near the city centre. At the edge of the city, you can also find another large cinema, Pathé Leidsche Rijn.

In the Netherlands, you don’t need to worry that you don’t understand what is said in a film, because unlike in some other countries, the Dutch don’t use dubbing for films. All films are spoken in their original language and have Dutch subtitles if necessary.

Gouden Kalf & Dutch Film Festival

Every year at the start of the fall, the Dutch Film Festival takes place in Utrecht. During this 10-day festival, a selection of Dutch films are played, of which most of them premiere, several discussion sessions, masterclasses and other events are organized.

At the Dutch Film Festival, the Gouden Kalf (Golden Calf in English) are awarded to, among others, the best film, the best director, the best actors and actress. The Gouden Kalf was designed in 1980 by Theo Mackaay, who is from Utrecht. Besided the Gouden Kalf, several other film prizes are awarded during the Dutch Film Festival.
