At the heart of the city lies the historical Dom square, a square rich in history and beauty. The staggering 112 meters tall Dom tower which rests in the middle of the square can be seen from nearly everywhere in Utrecht and always makes for a good reference point! Construction for this magnificent gothic masterpiece began all the way back in 1254 after a fire had ravaged much of the inner city of Utrecht. The Dom church lies on the square as well, where several university ceremonies take place annually. The church and the tower were originally connected, but a heavy storm completely destroyed the middle part of the church in 1674. Since final adjustments in 1826, the church and tower have remained unscathed.
